Casco Viejo, Panama

Writing from our hippy hostel in Casco Viejo, Panama. The old city is awesome to walk around especially around all of the old colonial era buildings and churches, though its better not to be out too late. Still, everything is being renovated and repaved and its starting to feel very upper class.

Sloth, Smithsonian tropical research institute. We walked right underneath it before a staff pointed it out.

The flights in went off without a problem. We eventually found the bus stop at Tocumen International frequented by airport employees. A trio of them were nice enough to help us get on the bus even without the necessary tarjeta, which we will have to purchase tomorrow. Bus dropped us off at the Mercado de Mariscos, and a ceviche stop was necessary. It is like an incredible, spicy, seafood coleslaw. Super good.

Found our backpacker-hostel hotel, and if anyone has seen Leonardo´s Thai hostel digs in the move The Beach, it is almost exactly the same. Chock full of people our age glued to iThings and trapped in the movie theater. I dont want to get stuck here; too many creature comforts.

We finished our whirlwind tour of Panama city with an awesome trip to the Miraflores Locks, the first ones between the canal and the Pacific ocean. Incredibly large, and really awesome that they are still using the original concrete and steel doors (from Pennsylvania) as they were in 1914.

Check out the electric tug cars that keep the ship centered...only 2 feet of clearance on each side.

I forgot to mention that we also did a visit of a number of Panama Canal history museums, including one that had a great temporary exhibit of Degas' work. He spent some time in Panama, apparently, but my Spanish wasn't good enough to figure out what was being said.
